چکیده

Asphalt road reflectance spectra change as pavement ages. This provides the possibility for remote sensing to be used to monitor a change in asphalt pavement conditions. However, the relatively narrow geometry of roads and the relatively coarse spatial resolution of remotely sensed imagery result in mixtures between pavement and adjacent landcovers (e.g., vegetation, buildings, and soil), increasing uncertainties in spectral analysis. To overcome this problem, multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA) was used to map the asphalt pavement condition using Worldview-2 satellite imagery in this study. Based on extensive field investigation and in situ measurements, aged asphalt pavements were categorized into four stages— preliminarily aged, moderately aged, heavily aged, and distressed. The spectral characteristics in the first three stages were further analyzed, and a MESMA unmixing analysis was conducted to map these three kinds of pavement conditions from the Worldview-2 image. The results showed that the road pavement conditions could be detected well and mapped with an overall accuracy of 81.71% and Kappa coefficient of 0.77. Finally, a quantitative assessment of the pavement conditions for each road segment in this study area was conducted to inform road maintenance management. © The Authors. Mapping Asphalt Road Conditions with Hyperspectral Remote Sensing

This study integrates ground spectrometry, imaging spectrometry, and in-situ pavement condition surveys for asphalt road assessment. There is strong spectral evidence for asphalt aging and deterioration processes, hence field spectra showed that asphalt aging and deterioration produce measurable changes in spectra as these surfaces undergo a transition from hydrocarbon dominated new roads to mi...

Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Asphalt Pavement Construction: A Case Study in China

In China, the construction of asphalt pavement has a significant impact on the environment, and energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from asphalt pavement construction have been receiving increasing attention in recent years. At present, there is no universal criterion for the evaluation of GHG emissions in asphalt pavement construction. This paper proposes to define the system boundar...

Modified multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis for mapping impervious surfaces in urban environments

A modified multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MMESMA) approach is proposed for high-spatial-resolution hyperspectral imagery in the application of impervious surface mapping. Different from the original MESMA that usually selects one endmember spectral signature for each land-cover class, the proposed MMESMA allows the selection of multiple endmember signatures for each land-cover cl...

Asphalt Pavement Performance Model of Airport Using Microwave Remote Sensing Satellite

The purpose of this study is to build the binary logit model of an airport pavement that could monitor the pavement condition in near real time using microwave remote sensing satellite, then the relationship between the international roughness index (IRI) of an airport and backscattering values from PALSAR images of the ALOS satellite was determined. Total 390 data were used in analysis. This m...
